How to Remove Hard Water Stains from a Glass Tile Shower Wall
Hard water stains on a glass tile shower wall can make it look cloudy and crusty. With a few household staples, you can dissolve the mineral deposits and restore the shine without scratching the glass.
Alternative: Lemon Juice
If you prefer a fresh scent, lemon juice can be used in place of vinegar. It has similar acidic properties that help dissolve mineral deposits. Follow the same steps, but use lemon juice instead of vinegar. Note that lemon juice may be slightly more acidic, so test it on a small area first.
What Not to Do
- Avoid harsh chemicals. Do not use bleach, ammonia, or commercial cleaners that contain acids stronger than vinegar, as they can damage the glass or grout.
- Don't use abrasive tools. Steel wool, scouring pads, or abrasive powders can scratch the glass surface permanently.
- Don't let the solution dry. If the vinegar or lemon juice dries on the glass, it can leave streaks or etch the surface. Always rinse thoroughly.
Fresh vs. Dried Stains
Fresh hard water stains are easier to remove because the minerals haven't had time to bond with the glass. For fresh spots, a simple wipe with a vinegar-dampened cloth may be enough. Dried or set-in stains may require multiple applications and a longer soaking time. If the stains are particularly stubborn, you can cover the area with a vinegar-soaked paper towel and let it sit for 30 minutes before scrubbing.
