Laundry Stains
How to Remove a Dried Coffee Stain from a Cotton T-Shirt
A dried coffee spill on a cotton t-shirt can leave a stubborn brown mark, but you can lift it with dish soap, white vinegar, and baking soda. Here's a practical guide for dried spills, with cotton-specific care tips.
- Mix a cleaning solution. In a small bowl, combine one tablespoon of liquid dish soap (like Dawn) with one tablespoon of white vinegar and two cups of cool water.
- Soak the stained area. Submerge the stained part of the t-shirt in the solution for 15-30 minutes. If the stain is on a thick area, you can also apply the solution directly to the stain and gently work it in with your fingers.
- Gently rub the stain. After soaking, use your fingers or a soft-bristled brush to gently rub the stain in a circular motion. Avoid scrubbing too hard, as this can damage the cotton fibers.
- Rinse thoroughly. Rinse the area with cool water to remove the soap and vinegar solution.
- Launder as usual. Wash the t-shirt in the washing machine with your regular detergent, using the warmest water setting recommended on the care label.
- Check before drying. After washing, check the stain. If it's still visible, repeat the process before drying. Drying can set the stain, so only put the shirt in the dryer once the stain is completely gone.
Alternative Method: Baking Soda Paste
Baking soda is a gentle abrasive that can help lift dried stains without damaging cotton.
- Make a paste. Mix three parts baking soda with one part water to form a thick paste.
- Apply the paste. Spread the paste over the stain, covering it completely.
- Let it sit. Allow the paste to sit on the stain for 30 minutes to an hour. It may dry and crack, which is fine.
- Gently scrub. Dampen the paste slightly and use a soft-bristled brush or your fingers to gently work it into the stain.
- Rinse and launder. Rinse the area with cool water, then wash the shirt as usual.
What Not to Do
- Avoid hot water. Hot water can set coffee stains, making them harder to remove. Always use cool or lukewarm water for the initial treatment.
- Avoid chlorine bleach. Bleach can weaken cotton fibers and may cause yellowing or discoloration, especially on colored shirts.
- Don't dry until the stain is gone. The heat from a dryer can permanently set the stain. Always air-dry or check the stain after washing.
- Don't rub vigorously. Aggressive rubbing can damage the cotton fibers and spread the stain.
