How to Remove a Fresh Tea Stain from a Cotton Shirt
A fresh tea spill on a cotton shirt doesn't have to become a permanent brown mark. With quick action and a few household staples, you can lift the stain before it sets.
Spilled tea on your favorite cotton shirt? Don't panic. A fresh tea stain is one of the easiest to remove if you act quickly. The tannins in tea can set into the fabric as they dry, turning a light brown spot into a stubborn mark. But with a few simple steps, you can lift the stain before it becomes permanent.
What to Do First
As soon as the tea hits your shirt, blot the area with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. Press down gently to absorb as much liquid as possible. Avoid rubbing, which can push the stain deeper into the fibers and spread it.

Once you've blotted up the excess, rinse the stain under cold running water. Hold the fabric with the stain facing down so the water flows through the back of the stain, pushing it out rather than deeper in. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear.
How to Remove the Stain
After rinsing, apply a small amount of liquid dish soap directly to the stain. Gently work it in with your fingers or a soft-bristled brush, using a circular motion. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes to break down the tannins.
Then, rinse the area again with cold water. If the stain is still visible, mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with two tablespoons of water and dab it onto the stain with a clean cloth. Blot gently, then rinse thoroughly.
