How to Remove a Fresh Red Wine Stain from a Cotton Mattress
A fresh red wine spill on a cotton mattress doesn't have to become a permanent purple mark. With quick action and a few household staples, you can lift the stain before it sets.
- Blot the stain: Use a dry cloth to blot up as much wine as possible. Work from the outside edge toward the center to prevent spreading.
- Apply dish soap solution: Mix one teaspoon of dish soap with two cups of cold water. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and blot the stain gently. The soap helps break down the wine's pigments.
- Blot with cold water: Dampen another cloth with cold water and blot the area to rinse out the soap. Blot dry with a clean towel.
- Use white vinegar: Mix one part white vinegar with two parts cold water. Apply this solution to the stain with a cloth and blot. Vinegar helps neutralize the wine's color. Blot again with cold water to rinse.
- Apply baking soda paste: Make a paste of baking soda and a little water. Spread it over the stain and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Baking soda absorbs remaining moisture and odors.
- Vacuum or brush off: Once the paste is dry, vacuum it up or brush it off with a soft brush. Check the stain; if it's still visible, repeat the process.
What Not to Do
- Avoid hot water: Heat can set the wine stain permanently. Always use cold water.
- Don't rub: Rubbing can damage the cotton fibers and spread the stain.
- Skip harsh chemicals: Bleach or strong cleaners can discolor the mattress and may leave harmful residues.
- Don't soak the mattress: Excess moisture can lead to mold or mildew. Use minimal liquid and blot thoroughly.
Fresh vs. Dried Stains
This guide is for fresh stains. If the wine has already dried, the process is different. Dried stains are harder to lift and may require a stronger approach, such as using an enzyme cleaner or a commercial upholstery cleaner. For fresh stains, the method above is effective because the wine hasn't had time to bond with the fibers.
Alternatives and Extra Tips
- Salt: For a very fresh spill, you can pour a generous amount of salt over the area to absorb the wine. Let it sit for a few minutes, then vacuum it up before proceeding with the soap and vinegar steps.
- Club soda: Some people find club soda effective on fresh wine stains. Blot with club soda instead of water in step 3.
- Hydrogen peroxide: For white cotton mattresses, a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (1 part peroxide to 2 parts water) can help lift stubborn stains. Test on an inconspicuous area first, and avoid on colored fabrics.
