How to Remove a Ballpoint Pen Ink Stain from a Polyester Couch

Follow these steps for the best chance of success:

1. Test in an inconspicuous area. Before applying any solution, test rubbing alcohol on a hidden part of the couch (like the back or under a cushion) to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration or damage.
2. Apply rubbing alcohol. Dampen a clean white cloth with rubbing alcohol. Blot the ink stain gently, working from the outside in to prevent spreading. You should see the ink transferring to the cloth. Continue blotting, using a fresh area of the cloth as it picks up ink.
3. Use a cotton swab for precision. For small or detailed areas, dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and gently roll it over the stain.
4. Rinse with dish soap solution. Mix a few drops of dish soap with water. Dampen a clean cloth with this solution and blot the area to remove any alcohol residue.
5. Blot with water. Use a cloth dampened with plain water to rinse the soapy residue.
6. Blot dry. Use a dry cloth to blot the area and remove excess moisture. Allow the couch to air dry completely.

Fresh vs. Dried Ink Stains

Fresh ink stains are easier to remove because the ink hasn't had time to set. For fresh stains, you can often skip the soaking step and go straight to blotting with rubbing alcohol. Dried ink stains may require more patience. You might need to let the rubbing alcohol sit on the stain for a few minutes to dissolve the ink before blotting. You can also place a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol over the stain and let it sit for 15–20 minutes, then blot.

What Not to Do

• Avoid heat. Do not use a hair dryer or iron on the stain, as heat can set the ink permanently.
• Avoid rubbing. Rubbing can damage the polyester fibers and spread the ink.
• Don't use bleach. Bleach can discolor or weaken polyester.
• Don't over-wet. Excess moisture can soak into the couch padding and cause mold or mildew.
