How to Remove Cat Urine from a Cotton Mattress
Cat urine on a cotton mattress can leave a stubborn stain and odor, but you can tackle it with an enzymatic cleaner and gentle blotting. Here's a practical guide for fresh and dried accidents, with cotton-specific precautions.
Dried cat urine is more challenging, but still removable. The key is to rehydrate the urine crystals so the enzymes can break them down.
- Vacuum the area to remove any dried residue or debris.
- Apply a generous amount of enzymatic cleaner to saturate the stained area. You may need to use more than for fresh urine.
- Cover the area with plastic wrap to keep it moist, and let it sit for several hours or overnight. This gives the enzymes time to penetrate the cotton.
- Remove the plastic wrap and blot up any excess liquid.
- Allow the mattress to air dry completely, preferably in a well-ventilated room.
- Repeat if necessary—dried urine may require multiple treatments.
If the odor persists after two or three treatments, consider using a black light to locate any missed spots, as dried urine can be invisible.
What Not to Do
- Avoid using bleach or ammonia-based cleaners. Ammonia can attract cats to urinate in the same spot again, and bleach can damage the cotton fabric.
- Do not use a steam cleaner or hair dryer. Heat can set the stain and odor permanently.
- Do not rub the stain. Rubbing can spread the urine and damage the mattress fibers.
- Avoid using baking soda and vinegar as a primary treatment. While they may help with odor, they are not as effective as enzymatic cleaners for breaking down uric acid.
Cotton-Specific Precautions
Cotton is a natural fiber that can absorb a lot of liquid, making it prone to deep stains. It is also sensitive to high heat and harsh chemicals. Always test any cleaner on a small, hidden area of the mattress first to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration or damage.
When using enzymatic cleaners, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Some products may require dilution, and using too much can leave a residue that attracts dirt.
