Laundry Stains
How to Remove Ketchup from a Cotton T-Shirt: Fresh and Set-In Stains
Ketchup on a cotton t-shirt can leave a stubborn orange-red mark, but you can lift it with dish soap and baking soda. Here's a practical guide for fresh and set-in stains, with cotton-specific precautions.
This method works for both fresh and set-in ketchup stains on cotton. Dish soap breaks down the oils and food particles, while baking soda acts as a gentle abrasive and helps absorb the stain.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Scrape off excess ketchup. Use a spoon or dull knife to remove any solid bits. Be gentle to avoid spreading the stain.
- Rinse with cold water. Hold the stained area under cold running water, with the water flowing from the back of the stain to push it out. Do this for a minute or two.
- Apply dish soap. Squirt a small amount of liquid dish soap directly onto the stain. Gently work it in with your fingers or a soft-bristled brush (like an old toothbrush). Let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
- Add baking soda. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the dish soap. The baking soda will form a paste with the soap. Gently rub the paste into the stain using a circular motion.
- Let it sit. Allow the paste to sit on the stain for 15-30 minutes. For set-in stains, you can leave it longer, up to an hour.
- Rinse thoroughly. Rinse the area with cold water to remove the paste. Check if the stain is gone.
- Wash as usual. If the stain is gone, wash the shirt in the washing machine with your regular detergent, using the warmest water safe for the fabric (check the care label). Air dry or tumble dry low.
Fresh vs. Set-In Stains
Fresh ketchup stains are much easier to remove. The steps above work well for fresh stains, and you may only need to repeat the process once or twice. For set-in stains (dried or old), you may need to let the dish soap and baking soda paste sit longer, and you might need to repeat the treatment a few times. Patience is key.
