Red Wine on a Cotton Tablecloth: What to Do First
Red wine spills on a cotton tablecloth are common, but acting quickly makes removal easier. Blot the stain immediately with a clean white cloth to absorb as much wine as possible. Do not rub, as this pushes the stain deeper into the fibers. If the spill is large, place a dry towel under the fabric to prevent the wine from spreading to other areas.
Fresh Red Wine Stains on Cotton
For fresh stains, follow these steps:
- Blot the stain with a white cloth or paper towel to soak up excess wine. Work from the outside edge toward the center to avoid spreading.
- Rinse the stained area with cool water from the back of the fabric to push the wine out.
- Apply a small amount of mild liquid dish soap directly to the stain.
- Gently work the soap into the fabric with your fingers or a soft-bristled brush.
- Let sit for 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water.
- Launder as usual with your regular detergent.
Dried Red Wine Stains on Cotton
If the stain has dried, use a baking soda paste:
- Scrape off any dried wine residue with a dull knife or spoon.
- Mix baking soda with a little water to form a thick paste.
