How to Remove Permanent Marker from Denim Jeans: Fresh & Dried Stain Steps
Step-by-step guide to safely remove fresh and dried permanent marker from denim jeans using rubbing alcohol and dish soap. Includes denim-specific tips, colorfastness testing, common mistakes, and when to call a professional.
Before You Start
Permanent marker ink is oil-based and sets quickly. Act fast on fresh stains. Denim is durable but its indigo dye can fade or bleed. Always test your chosen solvent on a hidden seam near the hem or inside the waistband. Use a white cotton ball or cloth to check for color transfer. If the test spot shows noticeable fading, stick to water and dish soap only. Work in a well-ventilated area, keep alcohol away from flames, and wear gloves if you have sensitive skin.
For Fresh Permanent Marker Stains
- Blot immediately with a white cloth or paper towel. Place an absorbent cloth behind the stain if possible. Do not rub—rubbing drives ink deeper into the fibers and spreads the stain.
- Dab with rubbing alcohol using a white cloth. Use 70% isopropyl alcohol. Start at the outer edge and work inward to avoid spreading. Let the alcohol sit for 30 seconds to dissolve the ink.
- Blot continuously with fresh sections of the cloth until no more ink transfers. Change cloths as soon as a spot becomes saturated.
- Rinse with cold water and a drop of mild liquid dish soap (free of dyes and fragrances). Gently rub the area with your fingers to lift any remaining residue. Blot dry with a clean damp cloth.
- Air dry completely. Check if the stain is gone before applying heat. Repeat steps if needed.
For Dried Permanent Marker Stains
- Pre-soak the stain with rubbing alcohol. Soak a white cloth and lay it over the stain, covering it fully. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes to rehydrate the ink. If the cloth dries, reapply more alcohol.
- Blot with a fresh alcohol-moistened cloth. You may need to repeat this step several times as old ink can be stubborn.
- Make a baking soda paste (3 parts baking soda to 1 part water). Apply a thick layer over the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes. For stubborn stains, you can increase the time to an hour. Keep the paste damp by covering with plastic wrap.
- Scrub gently with a soft-bristled brush or your fingers using a circular motion. Rinse the paste away with cold water.
- If stain remains, repeat the alcohol and baking soda steps. After successful removal, wash the jeans in cold water with regular detergent and air dry. Do not use fabric softener during this wash as it can set remaining traces.
